Mwanza is the second largest city in Tanzania, but this area also has the
highest maternal mortality in the country. Women give birth at home
and when difficulties arise, death occurs. What is desperately needed is a
safe place to give birth..... The Lutheran Bishop and his staff felt guilty about having a large well built 16 room headquarters. So they moved into smaller headquarters leaving the 16 room building to be developed into a women's health care unit. When we visited the unit, we found buildings that need very little repair outside of some minimal plumbing and a coat of paint. What we also found is that a hospital that closed in Wisconsin sent a 40 foot container of hospital supplies. While all the supplies cannot be used here, a great many can. There is a x-ray machine, a mammogram x-ray, wheelchairs, beds, mattresses, linen, and lots of other supplies. |
