Orphanage and Women’s Wisdom Center

Traditionally, the extended family would absorb children left alone because of the death of the parents. Because of the high rate of HIV/AIDS, the ability of the extended family to care for these children is compromised.  Pastors often have 5-7 extra children in their families in order to help.  But now, even these resources are not enough.

An orphanage is planned to provide homes for these children

African women often have a hard life.  Traditional homes have small rooms where women cook over charcoal or wood fires. In the Wasukuma area, there is a traditional belief that old women with red eyes have become witches. If a child dies in the family, these older women are often blamed.  A “Women’s Wisdom Center” connected with the orphanage will provide shelter for these women and comfort and parenting to the homeless children.

Family homes of 8-10 children with a couple to care for them as well as grandmothers in the family will provide a home like environment for the orphans and shelter to the older women.  Each home is connected to a church (of any denomination) which will be responsible for taking them to church, teaching them life skills, making sure they go to school, providing clothing.

This model has proven to be effective and caring in the care of these children.  Your group can adopt one of these homes or build one of them.  Frequent contact with the children, “parents” and grandmothers will be maintained.  Contact us if you are interested or want more information.

The land is purchased.
