April 2011 Update from IHPDear Friends and Donors to IHP-US-TZ
Joyusly,Mary Ellen Kitundu, President, IHP-US-TZ
Paula writing, Administrative Coordinator and Secretary to the Board of IHP US & Tz: It’s Easter time. It’s time to think about the love brought into the world that Jesus Christ demonstrated for us, that is alive within us. God loves each and every one of us, no matter what we’ve done, no matter how we’ve behaved. Jesus taught us about forgiveness. It’s time to think of that rebirthing of love within us, given by God, to be extended to the rest of the world.
Extend the love. How do we do that? Can you think of ways we do it daily? And ways we can do it even more? That’s what IHP is about. We’re extending outward the love that has been poured into us. It’s a stream of love, a river of love, an ocean of love.
How do we extend that love? By showing love to others, of course. That’s what we’re doing at IHP, we’re treating those who come to Nyakato Health Center needing help. You are helping us to do that. We’re making big strides toward seeing more and more patients with more services. And YOU are helping to extend your love by helping IHP do what we do. Thank you. Happy Easter.
The container has not yet left Mississippi, but it’s close to buttoning-it-up-time. If there are any “last minute” items you want to send, please contact Craig Bjorgum at craig@belindastewartarchitects.com. This is a LAST CALL!
The OB/Gyn team is here now doing life-saving surgeries on women, many of whom are bleeding to death from fibroid tumors. They’re using our new O.R. in the Bogumil Birthing Center. The patients are then wheeled over on the new walkway to the Patricia Ward for post-operative care and recuperation.
Dexter Quiggle, DDS is here. The patients who have come so appreciate his have professional dental care. Janet, the medical director’s daughter has learned to assist him. She wants to go into medicine and it’s obvious she’s got the talent to do that. There are more filled teeth now and fewer extractions thanks to the state-of-the-art dental unit donated by the Rotary of Woodland, CA. Dr. Bon has been an attentive student, preparing to carry the load when Dexter leaves and before the next dental team arrives. WE ARE NOW SOLICITING DENTAL TEAMS TO COME GIVE SERVICE AT NYAKATO HEALTH CENTER!!
Denny and I have lived in Tanzania for nine years now and had never been on a “safari”. We’d crossed the Serengeti many times in transit, and saw whatever animals were close to the road, but we’d never been on a “game drive.” We’d never stayed at a tented camp or in a lodge. Now we have. Our dear friend Vesna from Pure-Afro Travels graciously gave Mary Ellen, Denny and me a four day, three night safari in the Serengeti. It was wonderful. We took work along, of course, but never even started it. We say animals doing things we’d never seen before. We had a leopard resting UNDER our car!! We saw elephants playing in the water, and we saw giraffes as we’d never seen them before. Okay, I can’t resist, pictures attached.
Robert Newberry writing: Hi Everyone,
This is Robert Newberry golf-tournament organizer from La Crosse, WI. The outing is scheduled for Wednesday, July 6th at Noon. A nice meal with a silent auction will follow. The entry for golf, cart, events, meal & entry to the auction is $95. The course is a great championship course (The Golf Club at Cedar Creek hosted the Wisconsin State Open a few years ago).
For non-golfers there will be tickets for the meal and auction for $30. The hall holds 250 people, we are trying to reach 112 golfers (28 foursomes) then fill the rest of the hall with non-golfers for the auction. I appreciate your interest and hope you can join us. We will have flyers and entry forms out in early-May.
Dexter Quiggle, DDS: writing: My trip to IHP hospital Nyakato has been the culmination of a 3 yr project sponsored by my Rotary club in Woodland, Calif. and several other Rotary clubs in California and Nevada.3yrs ago I was asked to develop a list of equipment and supplies to start a dental clinic and to raise funds to purchase these things. After 24 months of fund raising we shipped a container to Nyakjato containing all necessary equipment and supplies to set up the clinic. I arrived on March 30th and after 4 days of unpacking setting up equipment and organizing supplies, the dental clinic was ready to see patients. It has been a very rewarding experience being able to help Tanzanians in need of dental care and to have set up a clinic that will provided dental treatment for years to come I will be here until May 5th providing treatment and working with Dr Bon on increasing his knowledge of dental techniques since he provides dental treatment when no dentist is visiting. It has been an exceptional trip for me seeing this project come to fruition. Working with the staff, interacting with everyone on the hospital grounds has been full of laughter, surprises and hard work. Nyakato now has a state of the art dental clinic able to provide most basic dental procedures. I would encourage any dental professionals (Doc's, hygienists, dental students etc) to visit Nyakato and enjoy the wonder of volunteering here--you won't be sorry and it will be an experience you will remember all your life. I will look forward to returning in the future.
Ingrid Cherrytree writing: Ingrid Cherrytree, resident physician Ob/Gyn at UC Davis, Sacramento, California. I am lucky enough to take a brief break from residency to travel to Tanzania. It is wonderful to be welcomed to this beautiful place and to learn more about the country and gynecology.
Sabrina Hussain writing: Hi there- this is Sabrina Hussain and I’m an OB/GYN practicing in Modesto. This is my second trip to Nyakato with Medicine in Action and it’s been great to have the opportunity to come back here. There’s been great progress since my last visit—the birthing center was barely started then and now they are getting ready to open. We just did our first surgeries in the new operating room! It’s been fun seeing everybody again. And once again, the suitcase I brought here that was filled with medical supplies will go back with me filled with souvenirs and baskets from Paula’s store!
Elaine Weatjen, M.D. writing: This is my third mission to Nyakato Health Center with Medicine in Action. It is great to be back working in the clinic with the wonderfully caring staff. It is a privilege to be here seeing patients with gynecology problems and being able to offer surgery to the women who need it. Today we operated on three women, and we have more surgeries lined up for the rest of the week. We are grateful to Paula, Denny and Mary Ellen's work in hosting us and making our missions successful.
Juliet Fernandez writing: I'm Juliet Fernandez, a 4th year medical student at Boston university school of medicine, graduating this coming May 21st, and going into general surgery. I'm also very much interested in international and global health. This is my first time in Tanzania, and I am finding the people and country to be very beautiful, and that this has been, thus far - such an eye opening experience.
Selemani Shabani, our Project Manager writing: J-E-S-U-S-= can’t be spelled with the “U”. This is because YOU are the reason why HE gave up His life on the cross, as HE loves me, HE loves you, too. I WISH YOU A HAPPY EASTER!
I am taking this opportunity to thank everybody for their time, help and support, your contributions to IHP. Really, your time, help, and support make all the difference to IHP. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
Just to let you know, we moved the O.R. from the Clinic to the birthing center. There is a medical team here and they are using it. We built a new walkway to the Patricia Ward and built a septic tank by the eye center which is 15 feet deep by 12 feet by 10 feet deep. We managed to do all of these through your help, support, and the time you have been contributing to us. Without you all of these could never have been done.
The new O.R. at the birthing center has tile walls and floor. Next week we are hoping to start working on the laundry roof and this will take a bit of time because we have to fabricate the trusses by ourselves.
Again, THANK YOU VERY MUCH and BE BLESSED.
This is Paula again, A special thank you goes out to all of those folks who have supplied us so generously with quilts, sheets, blankets, pillows, pillow cases, towels and wash cloths. Patients are now benefiting from your largesse.
For this work to go on, to improve and to grow, to extend the love, we need your help. There is love to give, and love to receive. Each patient is aware that this facility is there because YOU care. Please, help us continue to grow, to demonstrate the love for others that Jesus taught us to give.
Please send what you can to: International Health Partners, US & TZ Joyce Zemel, Treasurer 1811 So. 39th St. #36 Mesa, AZ 85206
Or, go to our website, www.ihptz.org and click on Just Give!
If you are able, please consider making a monthly pledge to IHP. That enables us to budget how many people we can hire to do the work and be assured that we’ll have their salaries for a whole year. Just $100 a month pays for a construction worker and is enough to support his or her whole family.
Blessings and gratitude, Paula, Den, and Mary Ellen
