1. Mwanza

·         In Mwanza, IHP is currently designing and renovating a Women’s Health and Birthing Center.  The area has the highest maternal and infant mortality rate.  In spite of training traditional midwifes, the high rate has continued. The East of Lake Victoria Diocese of the Lutheran Church has donated a lovely 16 room complex for the beginning of a health center soon to be developed into a hospital.

·         There are three dispensaries that are in need of assistance. One is in the southern part of Mwanza town, another in the town of Shinyanga and the third in the remote area of Isaka.  Currently they are being assessed and developmental plans being made.

·         The large number of orphans due to death of parents by AIDS and the large number of older women who are sometimes thought to be witches and are killed, make an idea pairing for an orphanage and a women’s wisdom center.  The orphanage will be constructed in family groups with the older women fulfilling the role of grandmother.

Dodoma

·         A group of women working to support their families and better themselves are in need of a building. Currently working in 3 poorly constructed buildings far apart from each other, they feel a building would enhance their work and allow them to incorporate others. One of their most effective activities is the small loan grants to women who have never had money of their own. This assists them. develop a project to help themselves and their families. IHP TZ has donated rafters for the building and is helping to write grants for the rest of the building estimated to cost $50,000.

·         Saint John’s University is a new university with a Department of Nursing.  Set to open in January of 2007, their needs are great for support both in equipment and partnerships.

Dar es Salaam-Bagamoyo

·         The need for a specialized non-profit pediatric HIV/AIDS hospital is great since none currently exists in Tanzania. All the plans for the hospital are ready as well as approval by various governmental organizations and land is in the process of being purchased. The needs for this hospital are financial at this point, with later needs encompassing volunteers, students, equipment, and research. The project proposal is available to those who are interested.  Besides the plans, the proposal includes equipment lists, supply lists, furnishing lists and a comprehensive list of proposals for hospital projects.  These activities include outreach, educational programs, specialized maternity and infant care for HIV+ mothers and infants as well as an orphanage for under 5 children with HIV/AIDS. A hostel for volunteers is also planned.

Medical Teams and Other Volunteers

In addition to the above projects, medical teams and personnel as well as volunteers come to help improve the health care in Tanzania. IHP serves as the vehicle to assist them to work in areas suited to their desires and abilities as well as the needs of the people in the selected area.
